After upgrading to VMware ESXi 8 – Dell VRTX Shared PERC 8 Not Available
We just started a upgrade process from the VMware ESXi 7.0.3 to the latest VMware ESXi 8.0.3 on the DELL VRTX with Dell PowerEdge M630 blade servers. After successful upgrade of the first node the ESXi does not recognize the Shared PERC 8 controller for the direct attached storage. As always i used the Dell custom image.
The main problem is, that the M640 for VRTX blades are on the HCL from VMware ESX 8, but the chassis – the VRTX not – This is only supported up to 7.03. No current or future driver development is planned for ESXi 8.x OS with SPERC. Driver development stopped at VMware ESXi 7.x
Is very nice from the DELL, that stops developing SPERC driver for vSphere 8, when the vSphere 7 ends at 11/2025. So the lot of customers, which buyed VRTX solution for 5+ years will be a forced to use old not supported vSphere 7.
The solution in my case was downgrade back to the 7.0.3 A10 and update to the latest A23.
