Hyper-V 2025 – The virtual machine cannot be moved to the destination computer
one of my customers purchased a brand new infrastructure on AMD platform, the old one infra is running on the DELL R740 with Intel Xeon Silver 4410 CPUs and my mission is migrate whole Failover Cluster (about 80 VMs) to the new Failover Cluster, which running on the DELL R7515 with AMD Epyc 9126. How about storage ? The old cluster (WS 2019) is directly connected via SAS to the legendary DELL SC3020 and new one cluster (WS2025) is directly connected via 25 GbE iSCSI to the brand new all-flash DELL ME5024.
All nodes are connected to the same 10 GbE live-migration network, delegation in AD is configured and in hyper-v settings is Kerberos and TCP/IP selected on all nodes (old and new cluster).
I created a new VM for migration test in the WS 2019 cluster and configure a CPU compatibility. I know, that you cannot perform a live migration (online) with different CPU vendors ( like in my case Intel > AMD) so i shutdown that VM and try to migrate to new cluster ( with „move“ in hyper-v manager on the old 2019 node). But i got an error message. „The virtual machine cannot be moved to the destination computer. The hardware on the destination computer is not compatible with the hardware requirements of this virtual machine“
The VM version of my testing VM is 8.0, which is compatible with WS 2025 ( vm version 10.0), the CPU compatibility was enabled, live migration is configured correctly.
After some research and trying all sorts of things i checked that name of vSwitch on old node and on the new-node is different. I renamed the vSwitches on the all new nodes and now the live-migration from old-cluster to new cluster is running correctly !
