Veeam Instant Recovery – Centos 8 after restore does not boot up
I just migrate customer infrastructure from Hyperv to VMware Cluster, 90% are Windows servers OS but the customer has some Centos 8 Linux VMs. I used same scenario as with Windows OS. But after sucesfull migration and power on in VMware infrastructure the OS does not boot up.
The system drops into dracut emergency shell and during boot process
Kernel initramfs image does not have necessary block device kernel modules (drivers) in it. The problem usually occurs when restoring virtual machines backed up to completely new hardware, for example when a virtual machine was backed up in Hyper-V and then restored to a VMware environment.
The solution:
- During the boot process, select rescue kernel option in grub
- If the system starts successfully, run dracut to update existing initramfs image for your usual kernel.
